CALVERTON, MD – Addressing an industry need for streamlined exchange of intermodal equipment among motor carriers, the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) has launched an online platform that facilitates what are commonly referred to as "street interchanges" and "street turns." The IANA Street Interchange Application brings a standard industry solution to existing practices and integrates with the Uniform Intermodal Interchange and Facilities Access Agreement (UIIA), administered by IANA. "IANA's latest Intermodal Information Service benefits the industry on multiple fronts, including driver productivity, terminal efficiency and reduced empty miles," said Joni Casey, president and CEO of IANA. "This online solution demonstrates what the industry can achieve when modes agree to partner." Street interchanges and street turns are common in an intermodal motor carrier's operations – a driver drops off a container and chassis, then picks up another, or a trucker moving an import box re-uses the same box for an export. The opportunity for significant industry-wide benefits occurs when equipment can be re-used without being returned to its pick-up location. IANA's new platform will accommodate these kinds of moves while validating the motor carrier's UIIA participation and documenting transfer of liability, indemnification and damage, under the terms of the UIIA, to the appropriate motor carrier. The web portal component of the application is now available, and introductory webinars are scheduled for July 7 th and 13 th. IANA will offer a mobile app and system-to-system application programming interface (API) later in the year. The new program is available to all UIIA participants at no charge. "A few months ago, we were pleased to hear IANA was looking into an industry-wide platform to facilitate street interchanges between different truckers. We have participated in a small beta test, and we believe this online vehicle may have the ability to expand our street interchange reach exponentially," said Tom Barattini, director corporate logistics for Hapag Lloyd (America), Inc. In addition to validating the container's equipment provider, the system interfaces with IANA's Global Intermodal Equipment Registry (GIER) and soon-to-launch Gate Control System.
