Leading classification society Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) has gained important recognitions from US Coast Guard as well as European Union. Close on the heels of its accreditation for EU MRV services from RvA (an EU notified body), Indian Register of Shipping has been recommended authorisation as a ‘Recognised Organisation’ to undertake statutory surveys and certification on behalf of US Coast Guard. Having received recognition from European Union in August 2016, this recognition from US Coast Guard is a major step forward signifying its growing global recognition. Executive Chairman Mr. Arun Sharma said today: “This USCG recognition represents a major step forward for IRClass as we strive to join the ranks of truly global classification societies. With its stringent monitoring processes and focus on high performance and quality, USCG sets high standards of safety and quality in the global shipping industry. IRClass is honoured to receive this RO status.” IRClass established its presence in US through its office in Houston in 2010. Another significant achievement is the authorisation from European Union Marine Equipment Directive (MarED). The MarED wheelmark has become a quality label for marine equipment on seagoing vessels worldwide as it indicates compliance with the conformity assessment procedures. This authorisation enables IRClass to act as a Notified Body to undertake EC Type Approvals for life saving appliances like lifebuoys, survival crafts and rescue boats, life jackets, inflatable life rafts amongst others. “This will open up global markets for Indian equipment manufacturers, who wish to export their equipment (which meets quality norms), once they are approved by IRClass. This will provide a boost and contribute to the ‘Make in India’ initiative. Going forward IRClass will undertake conformity assessments for marine pollution prevention and fire protection equipment as well,” Mr. Arun Sharma added.
