Jakarta International Container Terminal (”JICT”) announced that on December 19 it set a productivity record when handling its 2 millionth TEU, the figure is the terminal’s highest throughput since it commenced operations in 1999. The 2 millionth container was achieved while serving the MV. Topaz, a vessel belonging to JICT’s long-term customer, American President Line (”APL”).

JICT President Director Helman Sembiring said, ”This achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of all JICT employees and senior management. Our shareholders, Hutchison Port Holdings and PT. Pelabuhan Indonesia II are committed to improving the productivity of JICT through a series of major investments with the goal to transform JICT into a worldclass container terminal.”

”The global economic recovery has boosted international trade activities and we, in particular, have seen a notable increase in the number of import and export cargo in Indonesia. With the Indonesian economy expected to grow further in 2011, the ongoing expansion programme will give JICT greater capacity and handling capabilities to facilitate increasing volumes at the terminal,” stated Sembiring.

Once the expansion programme is completed in 2012, JICT will have an additional 12 hectares of container yard and automatic gates, thus, ensuring that the turnaround time for containers moving in and out of the terminal will become even more efficient. Overall, JICT’s capacity will increase by 50 percent to 3 million TEUs per year.

Mark Parco, APL Indonesia President Director, praised JICT for this significant achievement, ”JICT has been APL’s port of call in Indonesia for many years and the operational performance of JICT has improved dramatically. APL congratulates JICT on reaching 2 million TEUS and we look forward to continuing our successful relationship.”
