Legitimate concerns raised after Dubai Ports World's recent acquisition of six US port terminals

Upon learning of reports that partial ownership of operating companies that manage six (6) US port terminals including one in Philadelphia will now be assumed by a company based in the United Arabs Emirates, Congressman Frank A. LoBiondo (NJ-02) ' Chair of the House Coast Guard & Maritime Transportation Subcommittee - issued the following statement:

'While partial ownership of operating companies that manage port terminals by Dubai Ports World was approved by the Departments of Homeland Security, State, Treasury, Defense and Commerce, legitimate concerns by the public and members of Congress remain. I will further monitor this arrangement to ensure Dubai Ports World complies with all US port security laws and that our nation's security is not jeopardized by this recent business merger.'

At this time, LoBiondo's office has been briefed on the Dubai Ports World purchase by representatives from the US Coast Guard and the Department of Homeland Security. Additionally, the office has spoken with officials at several Delaware River ports. (See related articles in this week's Maritime Section, page X.)
