JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Ninety-seven vessels owned or operated by Crowley Maritime Corp. have been recognized by the Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) with Certificates of Environmental Achievement. The association’s awards honor companies for operating vessels without any environmental incidents, displaying a commitment to respecting and protecting the environment on oceans and inland waterways. The 97 vessels represent a combined sum of 992 years of service without an environmental incident, such as reportable spills or port citations, with 43 of them having served at least 10 years without an incident – a credit to Crowley’s longtime commitment to safety and high performance. “The significant number of vessels receiving this honor is a testament to the dedication to quality and safety by our crews and shore-side personnel,” said Mike Golonka, vice president, government services, who was part of the Crowley team that accepted the awards during an event Nov. 2 in Washington, D.C. “We appreciate the recognition from CSA and applaud their commitment to promoting safe, environmentally responsible marine operations. It is a value we share.” “In today’s world, it seems our industry only gets front-page news when spills or other environmental problems occur,” said Kathy J. Metcalf, president of CSA. “It is encouraging to see how many vessels go for years achieving environmental excellence. It should be clear to the American public that we in the maritime industry take our stewardship of the marine environment very seriously.” The awards are open to all owners and operators of vessels that operate on oceans and inland waterways. More information on the awards program can be found on CSA’s website, www.knowships.org.
