Pennsylvania Transportation Partners (PTP) -- the preferred bidders seeking to lease the Pennsylvania Turnpike -- applauded legislators who stood up for good government by strongly blocking an effort by special interests to suppress public debate on Gov. Rendell's proposal to lease the Turnpike.

"The introduction of the amendment to House Bill 2158 today was a nothing more than a political trick by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission," said PTP spokesman Jim Courtovich. "We are very pleased with the outcome of the vote because it proves that many in the legislature want an open and transparent debate on the lease and the politics of the Commission were flatly rejected."

"Surely, the opportunity for the commonwealth to receive an up-front payment of $12.8 billion to help fix crumbling roads and bridges - the largest such deal in US history -- is worthy of an open and transparent debate. That is what we are seeking."

When compared to Act 44, the lease of the Pennsylvania Turnpike would provide more money for infrastructure; eliminates the need for tolls on I-80; and calls for less of an increase of tolls on the Turnpike than what the Commission has already scheduled.

"Gov. Rendell has called on the General Assembly to consider the lease proposal when they return from summer recess," Courtovich added. "We remain hopeful the legislature will proceed accordingly. In the meantime, we look forward to appearing before the House Transportation Committee next week, and we will continue to meet with as many lawmakers, groups and individuals as we can from all across the state to further educate them on the benefits of the Turnpike lease."
