The Port of Nansha, located on the west side of the Pearl River, northwest of Hong Kong, posted an impressive 10.5% rise in container throughput from 2016 to 2017. In 2016 the Chinese port’s throughput was 12.622 million TEUs which rose to 13.934 million TEUs in 2017, an increase 10.5%.

The Port of Nansha, which is part of the Guangzhou Port is ranked 7thin the world in terms of TEU throughput with 2017 throughput of 20.35 million. It is the fastest rising port among South China’s burgeoning port network.

One of the biggest reasons for the jump was trade with North America. In 2016, the Port of Nansha handled 482,573 TEUs. This total skyrocketed to 639,981 TEUs in 2017, a 32.6% increase.

John L. Painter, president & CEO Port of Nansha Guangzhou Port America, LLC said of the North American performance, “it seems Port of Nansha is really catching on with the North America marketplace and the industry recognizes our proven value proposition.”

Currently the Port of Nansha has over 50 global services serviced by over 20 carriers. The port has four services to the U.S. West Coast, and Painter said the port’s and shippers are actively seeking an East Coast service. The Port’s location as the only deepwater port on the west side of the Pearl River Delta is a key to the recent surge. The location is close to many new sourcing factories providing products for export as well as a rising population of domestic consumers. The west side of the Pearl River is also less congested than the Shenzhen ports on the east side of the Pearl River Delta.
