South Africa’s Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) exported 71.3 million tonnes of coal in 2014, the highest amount ever, and has completed research on expanding its capacity to 110 million tonnes this year, the company said on Tuesday. Exports rose 1.4 percent last year from 70.2 million tonnes in 2013 and were just shy of its 73 million tonne target, a presentation by the company showed. Chief executive Nosipho Siwisa-Damasane told Reuters the company was expanding to accommodate small coal producers. RBCT, the world’s largest coal terminal, said it now aimed to expand the terminal’s capacity to 110 million tonnes from 91 million tonnes. The price of coal almost halved in 2014 due to a glut of supply and weaker demand growth, pushing some producers to curtail activity, sell or shut coal mines. A major exporter of coal to Europe and Asia, RBCT moves the commodity on behalf of South African-based producers such as Exxaro and Anglo American, which are also shareholders in the terminal.
