Summer high school interns arrive at the Port of Long Beach

Students spend the summer learning about Port operations and public service

Fresh faces arrived at the Port of Long Beach this week ready to begin a summer of learning about the maritime industry and port operations. The Port’s paid High School Internship Program gives students from the Long Beach area the opportunity to gain real-world experience in a variety of Port-related and public service careers.  Each port intern will spend eight weeks working with a mentor from the Port or City of Long Beach to develop career skills and gain meaningful work experience. They will also have the opportunity to see port operations up close in the harbor on a variety of different tours and field trips.  Divisions at the Port that students will work with include Environmental Planning, Transportation Planning, Survey, Maintenance, Communications, Construction Management, Program Management, Information Management, Business Development, Security, Engineering Design, Tenant Services and Human Resources. Interns will also work with mentors from the City of Long Beach Civil Service Commission and Human Resources Department, the Long Beach Fire Department and the Mayor’s Office. The interns are juniors and seniors from high schools across the Long Beach area. This year, seven schools are represented: California Academy of Mathematics and Science, Poly, Wilson, Jordan, Cabrillo, Renaissance and Lakewood high schools.  “Internships are just one part of the many educational opportunities that the Port offers to Long Beach youth.  Investing in students today will create the Port’s leaders for tomorrow,” said Harbor Commission President Lori Ann Guzmán.
