U.K. Business Secretary Greg Clark called for closer trade ties with India after visiting the country on Tuesday and meeting with ministers and company leaders in New Delhi. Clark held talks with Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy and Mines Minister Piyush Goyal and Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to discuss future cooperation between the nations, his office said in a statement on Wednesday. “The U.K. has a long-standing trade relationship with India and we want this to grow and prosper,” Clark said in the statement. “The U.K. is already the largest G20 investor in India and I want to nurture these trade links further, deepening our co-operation on areas such as energy and infrastructure.” The U.K. is trying to beef up commercial relationships with non-European Union members in the wake of the country’s vote in June to exit the 28-nation bloc. One of the main pillars of the pro-Brexit campaign was that Britain would be able to quickly negotiate free trade deals with countries across the world if it was freed from EU rules. Clark’s visit to India was the first by a cabinet minister since Theresa May succeeded David Cameron as U.K. prime minister last month. He’s also visited Japan since being appointed to his post.
