The cargo turnover at Bulgaria's Black Sea port of Varna hit a new all-time high in September, reaching 1.065 million tons, the country's Transport Ministry said on October 4 2011.

The cargo turnover in September was higher than the previous record registered in August, when the port reported for the first time monthly freight volume of one million tons.

In the first nine months of the year, the port handled 6.66 million tons of cargo, an annual increase of 12 per cent.

The port's net profit stood at 3.5 million leva in the nine-month period.

Grain shipments rose by 12 per cent on the year to 1.51 million tons. The port mainly handles grain exports to Spain, Italy, Portugal, the Netherlands, Belgium and Greece.

The port also handled 91 000 containers, the statement said without providing comparative figure.

The port expects to process more than 8.5 million tons of cargo this year and to record a net profit of four million leva. (Reuters)
