The US Department of Commerce is continuing an investigation into Applied Materials Inc.’s shipments to Chinese customers, part of a broader effort to ensure that increasingly strict trade restrictions against the Asian nation are effective.

Global goods trade is showing signs of accelerating after last year’s slump, pushing up shipping rates and giving some supply-chain managers flashbacks to the demand spike that disrupted international commerce three years ago.

President Joe Biden plans to extend tariff exemptions on hundreds of products from China for two weeks as a transition period before reimposing duties on some of them, and will continue exclusions for some others until the middle of next year, the office of the US Trade Representative said.
