The Port of Virginia handled 178,584 TEUs in May, an increase of 12.6 percent when compared with totals from May 2011. Year-to-date, the port has handled 826,297 TEUs vs. 792,458 TEUs handled during the same period last year, an increase of 4.3 percent.

Also in May the breakbulk tonnage total was 25,161, a 59 percent increase when compared with totals from last May. The year-to-date breakbulk comparison in tons (2012 vs. 2011) is: 153,415 vs. 123,369, an increase of 24 percent.

Total rail containers handled in May were 33,221, a 21.6 percent increase when compared with last May. The year-to-date rail containers total is 148,794 vs. 131,709 for the same period last year; an increase of 13 percent.

The number of containers moved between the Port of Richmond and the Hampton Roads Harbor on the 64 Express barge service in May was 1,019, an increase of 144 percent. The year-to-date total for the barge is up 97 percent: 3,994 containers vs. 2,023 containers handled during the same period in 2011.
