How technology is impacting construction logistics plans

Sep 22, 2017
Despite the construction industry being one of the slowest to adopt new technologies unlike other industries, in the past few years the construction industry has begun to embrace new technologies and use them to their advantage and keep up with other trades. One of the most vital elements in all aspects in construction is productivity. The adoption of new technologies such as using a mobile based application helps improve construction project productivity in areas including materials management and tool use time, including time spent using drill rigs. Construction Logistics Plans are an important management tools for planners and managers alike including all parties involved in the process. They help reduce the negative effect construction could have on everyday lives, including creating congestion, pollution and noise. A well-constructed construction logistics plan will benefit both the environment and people who live close by –but how is technology impact construction logistics plans? Advances in technology are impacting construction logistic plans help develop new design and modelling software programs. Even some of the most experienced construction businesses struggle to bring a customer’s ideas to life. People are often disappointed at the end of a construction project due to the lack of detail but now new software has been developed to help address this issue. More construction businesses are investing in high-end design and modelling software programs to avoid misinterpreting original ideas and show a customer exactly how the completed project will look so changes can be made before work begins. Enhancements made to mobile technology have made them an important asset to a number of construction companies. Apps we are unaware of are used within the construction industry to design blueprints at the convenience of a mobile device in your hand, such as PlanGrid. PlanGrid is just one app used to update all team members with the latest drawings. Mobile technology also improves productivity. People working onsite are able to submit daily reports to ensure progress is moving forward as planned. Advanced task management software has improved and enhanced services in the same way and can also be used to track progress as well as time clock. Drones are one of the latest technological advancements and have started to change the way we approach certain challenges. For example, the way we face surveying and monitor security. Not only are drones being used to design construction sites, they can now be used to create blue prints too which saves both money and time. In recent years, 3D printing has become yet another important aspect to the construction industry. It allows architects explore shapes in their designs and guarantee more precise building since the file is passed directly from a computer to a machine so there is no room for human interruption. Despite still being in its early stages and not used by all, if this is what is possible now we can only imagine what further technology advancements will do for the construction industry.
