APM Terminals Barcelona, with the goal of validating the action guidelines set out in its Emergency Plan, has performed fire and evacuation simulation on an SC crane. The simulation was carried out in coordination with the Port of Barcelona, since the Emergency Plan of APM Terminals Barcelona is integrated into the plan of the port community.

The fire was simulated with the SC surrounded by a block of containers, making it more difficult to reach. "We staged a difficult situation — explain those responsible for the simulation — in which the crane operator was not able to not leave his cabin, since he was overcome by smoke inhalation." Therefore, since the fire had to be extinguished and an evacuation carried out, the Emergency Plan was activated.

Activating the plan involved teams of Firefighters, Port Police and the Medical Service coming to the scene.

"Evacuation was performed with a 42 metre ladder, the highest currently available in Barcelona, put into service specifically for the simulation," explained those responsible for the exercise.

With this type of activity, involving all the people involved in port logistics on a day to day basis, APM Terminals Barcelona promotes an opportunity for reflection, where experiences are shared and opportunities for improvement identified which allow us to continue strengthening the safety culture of everybody involved.
