‘Greener Ports are Smarter Ports’ the 2018 provisional programme highlights actions to promote sustainability and monitor environmental practices.

Fareham UK – GreenPort Congress America, to be held in Baltimore, Maryland, announces the launch of its 2018 provisional programme. The programme, covering topics such as ‘Port’s responses to climate change’ and ‘Building a sustainable supply chain’, offers attendees detailed insight into how climate change can be addressed and what actions could be taken.

The Congress will be opened by Maryland’s Transportation Secretary, Peter K Rahn, followed by The Maryland Lieutenant Government Boyd K. Rutherford and Bayard Hogans, General Manager and Head of Ports America Chesapeake.

Running from the 16-18 May, the first day of congress will welcome a number of topics including ‘Building a sustainable logistics/supply chain’ which will offer insight into implementation of sustainable supply chain management. Moderated by Donovan Murray, General Manager, Intermodal / Trade Development, Maryland Port Administration, this topic will cover product design and distribution, recycling of waste material, social responsibility and environmental consciousness.

Day two of the congress will focus on collaboration between ports and shipping, including the topics ‘What are vessels doing to embrace sustainability and prepare for the future?’ moderated by David Thomas, Deputy Executive Director, Maryland Port Administration. ‘Sister ports working together on greening their ports’ will also be covered, including case studies on the Ports of Tacoma (Washington) and Seattle who will discuss their environmental innovation and successes on balancing environmental enhancements with port expansion. The session will also include how sister ports Kitakyushu and Kobe, Japan took learnings from the ports and were able to create their own environmentally conscious strategies.

Speakers have been invited or have confirmed from Japan, Australia, US and Europe including representatives from Maersk Line, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics, Volvo, and the Port of Virginia and New Orleans, creating a global view point for discussions. The final day of the conference will welcome several technical visits, including a landside port tour, waterside port tour and the unique opportunity to visit Poplar Island, which has become a national model of environmental restoration. Delegates are able to make their choice of preferred tour.
