Local students celebrated in fifth annual education event

At the fifth annual “Celebrating Education” event on Monday, May 14, the Port of Long Beach awarded $54,750 in scholarships to 39 local college and high school students interested in pursuing careers in international trade and goods movement.

This year’s scholarships went to students from local high schools, Long Beach City College and California State University, Long Beach. Since 1993, the Port of Long Beach has now awarded $775,400 in scholarships to 464 students.

The Port’s 2018 summer high school interns were also announced. As part of the program, students spend eight weeks gaining real-world experience, guided by Port of Long Beach staff mentors.

“We believe that our future leaders can be found right here in Long Beach, and we have made education outreach a priority,” said Harbor Commission President Lou Anne Bynum. “Congratulations to all of the students and scholars being honored today, and the teachers who helped them get here.”

“The smartest thing we can do is develop a highly trained workforce for the fourth Industrial Revolution: innovation and technology. We are looking to young people to energize our city’s primary economic engine, and we are proud to be part of that,” said Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero.

The Port of Long Beach is one of the world’s premier seaports, a gateway for trans-Pacific trade

and a trailblazer in goods movement and environmental stewardship. With 175 shipping lines

connecting Long Beach to 217 seaports, the Port handles $180 billion in trade annually, supporting hundreds of thousands of Southern California jobs.
