House Bill 1729, which establishes term limits for members of the Port Freeport Commission, went into effect on September 1, 2025. The bill, co-authored by Representative Cody Vasut and Representative Jeff Barry, was written at the request of the Port Commission, which unanimously approved a resolution calling for its passage.
Under the new law, individuals who have served two full terms as a Port Freeport commissioner will no longer be eligible for re-election. However, any time served to complete an unexpired term due to a vacancy will not count towards this term limit. This legislation will only apply to terms that begin after the effective date.
