Port truck drivers will join Senator Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) for a press conference on Tuesday, April 24, at the California Capitol – kicking off two days of legislative hearings on Senate Bill 1402, Dignity in the Driver’s Seat.

SB 1402 seeks to end the rampant exploitation of many of California’s estimated 25,000 port truckers who haul goods for the nation’s largest retail companies. SB 1402 allows retail companies to be held liable for wage and labor violations when they hire trucking companies that exploit workers.

The California Labor Commissioner’s office has won more than $45 million in judgments on behalf of drivers, and news stories have documented numerous cases of drivers working for poverty wages and in dangerous conditions in a race to the bottom.

SB 1402 will be heard for the first time in the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, April 24, and Labor and Industrial Relations Committee on Wednesday, April 25.
