The Containerization & Intermodal Institute (CII) which commenced operations in 1960, inaugurated its scholarship program in 1992 and has awarded over $1 million in scholarships to deserving undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in transportation and supply chain management.

At the Long Beach event, 18 scholarships were awarded to students from California State University (Long Beach); the University of Southern California and USC Marshall. In addition EXP - the Opportunity Engine and the California Maritime Academy were presented with scholarships for their commitment to grooming future leaders in the transportation industry.

In speaking at the event Dr. Anil Vitarana a Board Member of CII urged the industry leaders present to continue to support the scholarship program to build a robust talent pipeline for the future manpower needs of the industry.
