The Transportation Intermediaries Association (TIA) honored U.S. Representative John Garamendi (D-CA) and U.S. Representative Bob Gibbs (R-OH) for their exceptional contributions to the third-party logistics (3PL) industry during the 2019 TIA 3PL Policy Forum, held June 11-12, 2019 in Washington, DC.
“TIA is honored to present Congressman Garamendi and Congressman Gibbs with the 2019 TIA 3PL Congressional Leadership Award. Congressman Garamendi and Congressman Gibbs have been champions for the 3PL industry and transportation industry for many years. They are helping TIA shepherd through a Motor Carrier Safety Selection Standard that would drastically improve Motor Carrier safety and should be commended for their support and efforts,” said Chris Burroughs, Vice President of Government Affairs for TIA.
The Motor Carrier Safety Selection Standard would promote safety in the transportation industry and enhance interstate commerce.
If enacted, a hiring entity would be required to:
• ensure that a carrier is properly registered,
• has obtained the required insurance, and
• does not have an unsatisfactory safety rating
Currently, there is no standard or duty of care an entity must take when hiring a carrier. This is a huge step towards removing unsafe carriers from the highways and will remove liability traps plaguing the 3PL industry and shipping.
