Destination: India → Oman → United Arab Emirates

Introduction

Khimji Ramdas Shipping, a member of the XLProjects Network (XLP), successfully managed the transportation of 1,220 steel coils weighing approximately 31,000 metric tons from Mumbai Port, India, to Sohar Port, Oman, followed by final delivery to six destinations across the United Arab Emirates during April 2026. The contingency-driven operation required flexible planning and close coordination amid regional disruptions affecting vessel routing and transportation in the Gulf of Oman.

Body

The project involved 32 Bills of Lading covering cargo for nine clients. Individual steel coils weighed approximately 22 to 27 metric tons, requiring an estimated 480 to 565 flatbed trailer movements based on payload capacities of 55 to 65 metric tons.

UAE-bound cargo was diverted through Oman, while high demand for vessel berthing at Sohar created additional pressure on vessel scheduling and onward transportation planning. At the Steinweg yard, cargo was stored in mixed condition without physical segregation by client or Bill of Lading, requiring the Khimji Ramdas Shipping team to identify and allocate the correct coils for each destination on a daily basis.

The team also managed trailer shortages, fluctuating transportation costs, changes in yard productivity, customs and border formalities, and simultaneous delivery requirements across six UAE destinations. Continuous coordination with the yard, transporters, customs authorities, clients and delivery points, supported by weekend and night-shift operations, helped keep the cargo moving despite changing conditions.

The project was successfully completed in April 2026, demonstrating the importance of operational coordination, flexibility and hands-on project management when handling large-scale cargo movements under challenging regional conditions.
