Following the successful installation and use of LED lamps in its truck station, Fraport Cargo Services (FCS) is now planning to introduce this lighting technology throughout its 48,000-square-meter handling warehouse in CargoCity South of Frankfurt Airport.

In a pilot phase last year, 114 fluorescent tubes in the truck station were replaced with 24 LED lamps. This measure resulted in significantly reduced power consumption and costs. Now the existing roughly 4400 lamps in the handling hall are to give way to about 520 LED lamps. FCS expects that this step will slash expenditures for power by more than 60 percent while also greatly reducing maintenance requirements, since the LED lamps last an average of five years or five times as long as conventional fluorescent lamps. The pilot phase also showed that despite their lower power consumption, LED lamps provide superior illumination, which improves workplace safety, among other benefits.

The considerable investment involved is also justified by the eco- friendliness of the LED lamps: besides consuming less energy and therefore causing few carbon dioxide emissions, after they eventually burn out the pollutant-free lamps can be disposed of without harming the environment.

FSC is also setting an example in terms of environmentally friendly materials handling technology. At the CeMAT trade show in Hanover in May, Fraport took possession of the first hybrid forklift truck made by the company of Still. It will be deployed in FCS's air cargo handling operations. The new RX 70/30 Hybrid forklift truck consumes up to 15 percent less fuel by storing braking energy and reusing it the next time the vehicle accelerates. While delivering the same performance, the new RX 70/30 Hybrid is equipped with a diesel engine with an output of only 36 kW instead of 44 kW.

Fraport Cargo Services has implemented an EMAS-tested environmental management system in compliance with EG Directive 761/2001 and is certified under DIN EN ISO 14 001:2005.
