DRS’ Sentyz sees bright future 
for Delaware River commerce

Andrew  Sentyz  is approaching 
his fifth year as President of Delaware 
River Stevedores Inc. (DRS), the latest 
stop in  a 30-year  maritime  career 
that started dockside as a longshore-
man and now places him in the exec-
utive suite with one 
of the largest marine 
terminal 
operators 
in the Mid-Atlan-
tic. DRS operates Phi-
laPort’s Tioga Marine 
Terminal, 
provides 
cargo handling and ste-
vedoring services to the 
South Jersey Port Cor-
poration’s 
Balzano 
and Broadway Ter-
minals in the Port 
of 
Camden, 
oper-
ates the Military  Ocean Terminal at 
Sunny Point,  NC,  and  stevedoring 
and terminal services at the Port of 
Philadelphia’s newest terminal, the 
Philadelphia Cruise Terminal at Hog 
Island. DRS deals with a broad array 
of cargoes including  breakbulk, dry 
bulk, project, RO/RO, containers, and

Sentyz  recently  met with the 
American Journal of Transporta-
tion  (AJOT)  to answer a  handful of 
questions about the present and future 
of the Delaware River.  
AJOT: What is the state of Del-
aware River  labor relations  on the 
heels of the master contract ratified 
last year? 
Sentyz:  The state of labor rela-
tions along the Delaware River is, by 
any meaningful measure, in  a very 
positive  place. The ratification of 
the master contract last year marked 
a significant turning point, one that 
has brought stability, clarity, and a 
renewed sense of shared purpose 
between management and the ILA. 
For years, the 
uncertainty surround-
ing contract nego-
tiations created an 
undercurrent of fric-
tion that, whether vis-
ible or not, had real 
operational 
conse-
quences. That uncer-
tainty is now gone. 
What we have in its 
place is the  remain-
der  of a six-year 
runway of uninter-
rupted collaboration, a window that is 
frankly rare in this industry and one we 
do not take lightly. 
On the ground, the relationship 
with the ILA is constructive and for-
ward-looking. Both sides came to this 
agreement with a clear understanding 
of what is at stake, not just for the ports, 
but for the workforce, the customers, 
and the broader regional economy that 
depends on remaining competitive and 
reliable. That shared understanding has 
translated into a working relationship 
built on mutual accountability rather 
than managed tension. 
What this contract affords us most 
is focus. Rather than directing energy 
toward the negotiating table, we can 
now direct it where it belongs, toward 
continuous improvement. That means
