Remarks made at NY/NJ Foreign Freight Forwarders & Brokers Association dinner as Person of the Year

NEW YORK - Evergreen’s Roy Amalfitano said that the global transportation industry “must all be committed to constantly look for ways to keep our businesses strong, be open for change, and strive to achieve profitability, no matter how difficult it may seem.” He added: “It could be the key to your very survival.”

Mr. Amalfitano, Vice Chairman of Evergreen Shipping Agency (America) Corp., US agents for Evergreen Line, made the remarks as he accepted the “Person of the Year” award at the 101st annual dinner of the NY/NJ Foreign Freight Forwarders & Brokers Association at the Marriott Marquis Hotel here. The award was presented by association President William B. Skinner III before a sell-out crowd of some 800 guests.

Pointing to his company’s embracing change, Mr. Amalfitano said: “Evergreen’s flexibility shows when a global ocean carrier long committed to independence can lead an alliance charge for the good of the industry, enhanced service scope globally, and supporting the use of shared operations resources.” He also paid respects to past shipping leaders who were his mentors and said: “Sometimes I tell the younger members of our industry to lean on and learn from an older colleague. They offer you wisdom, legacy, good advice, many, many great stories and, plus, they know all the good restaurants.”

Mr. Amalfitano thanked his Evergreen colleagues: “The energy within Evergreen, the innovative spirit of those who make up the Evergreen team globally and the day-to-day relevancy of everyone make each day a pleasure to go to work.” He also acknowledged previous award recipients: “It is truly an honor to be part of an elite group of previous recipients In fact, I know recipients also thank the co-workers and people within their companies who share the honor. And I am no different. I am very fortunate to work with so many bright, committed, hard-working professionals.” Finally, he thanked his wife, son and daughter, all of whom attended the event.

Mr. Amalfitano joined Evergreen 34 years ago in the Los Angeles office and held senior positions in the Midwest and California before transferring to the U. S. headquarters office in the NY/NJ area as President. He was promoted to vice chairman last year.

Mr. Amalfitano and his wife and two children reside in Somerset County, NJ. A native of California, he is a graduate of California State University, Long Beach with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Business Administration.
