Returns to waterfront after five years at temporary offices

The Port Administration Building in downtown Long Beach. The City of Long Beach Harbor Department is beginning its move to the newly built Port Administration Building. The Department that oversees the Port of Long Beach is relocating over the next three weeks to the new Long Beach Civic Center.

Harbor Department administrative staff has worked at a building near the Long Beach Airport since February 2014. The Department’s previous Administration Building opened in 1960 and was found to be seismically unsafe.

The new headquarters at Ocean Boulevard and Magnolia Avenue in downtown Long Beach was built as part of the Civic Center project, which includes a new City Hall, Main Library, Lincoln Park and private development. The project’s total cost to the Port is $235.2 million.

“The Harbor Commission is proud this project has been completed on schedule and best of all, within budget,” said Long Beach Harbor Commission President Tracy Egoscue. “The new Civic Center is going to be a big part of the ongoing downtown renaissance and is an ultra-modern and sustainable facility the public can be proud of while they access local government offices.”

The building was constructed to the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental program’s Gold standard. Features include photovoltaic panels that offset 25% of electricity consumption, an exterior that maximizes natural light exposure during the day, an underfloor air distribution system to reduce energy used for heating and cooling, and cisterns to manage stormwater runoff and irrigate the site.

“We’re all excited to return to the waterfront, where we belong,” said Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero. “Being near the harbor will allow us to work more efficiently with our tenants and fulfill our mission to facilitate trade and be a key engine of the city’s economy.”

The Department’s move to the new headquarters started on July 12 and will continue in phases until July 29.

Beginning Aug. 1, mail can be sent to the Port at:
