Washington, D.C. -- Larry I. Willis, president of the Transportation Trades Department, issues this statement in response to the Federal Transit Administration giving low ratings to the aging Portal Bridge and Hudson River rail tunnels, which are part of the Gateway Project, thereby making them ineligible to receive Capital Investment Grants funds:

“Failing to fund the Gateway project doesn’t just have massive implications for New York, New Jersey, and our national economy. It also directly impacts the frontline workers—including electricians, operators, track employees, and signalmen—who are responsible for keeping this system running safely and efficiently with infrastructure that is more than a century old.

“The Trump Administration needs to stop playing petty politics and do what is right for this country and working people.”
