Cargo 2000's aim to develop a quality measurement for air cargo at airports has received a boost with Amsterdam Airport Schiphol's decision to join the group.

The airport is one of the world's leading cargo gateways, handling 1.57 million tons of cargo per annum carried by nearly 100 airlines, including 25 freighter operators.

Enno Osinga, Senior Vice President Cargo of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, said: 'Amsterdam Airport Schiphol's membership of Cargo 2000 exemplifies our commitment to simplifying the air cargo business. Cargo 2000 perfectly complements the airport's efforts in air cargo process improvements, such as promotion of e-freight and Schiphol SmartGate Cargo, a project aimed at integrating cargo control and inspection processes. Cargo 2000's focus on process quality and control fits perfectly in Amsterdam Airport Schiphol's ambition to become Europe's fastest, most efficient and reliable air cargo hub.'

The airport has been linked to Cargo 2000 previously through Cargonaut BV, which joined in 2005. The airport is a shareholder in Cargonaut, a provider of information services to airlines, forwarding agents, ground handlers, truckers and shippers, as well as customs and other government institutions.

Lothar Moehle, Regional Director EMEA for Cargo 2000, said: 'One of our goals is to bring the major cargo airports of the world into Cargo 2000. As well as increasing our ability to influence quality measurement of air cargo at airports, they also have an important role to play in raising awareness of our industry standards within their local freight community. Amsterdam Schiphol serves some 100 airlines as well as a community of that includes 10 cargo handling companies, over 150 logistics service providers and more than 25 trucking organisations.'

Cargo 2000 now boasts a membership of over 70 airlines, freight forwarders, ground handlers, trucking and IT service providers, all working to implement its quality management system to improve the quality of air cargo.
