Global container terminal operator to give industry keynote address at international cargo handling NGO conference in Barcelona, Feb 2016 ICHCA International, the global cargo handling NGO association, has announced that Kevin Furniss, VP Health, Safety, Environment & Sustainability for APM Terminals, will give a keynote address on “Safety, Security & Efficiency in the Era of Scale” at the ICHCA International 2016 conference, 29 Feb-2 Mar, Barcelona, Spain.  The news follows the recent announcement that Kitack Lim, Secretary General-elect of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), will give the opening keynote. Headquartered in The Hague, APM Terminals currently has operations at 66 ports and terminal facilities in 40 countries, with seven new terminal development projects and 16 expansion programs now underway, along with 166 inland services operations in 47 countries. Earlier this year, the global operator announced a new safety campaign to protect truckers entering its facilities, as part of a company-wide programme for its portfolio of directly-managed facilities that aims to eliminate the five primary risk areas associated with 90% of fatal injuries during terminal operations. The company says that non-terminal employees, including outside truck drivers, are often at the greatest risk of injury during port operations. In his keynote address, Mr. Furniss is expected to discuss the new programme, as well as speaking more generally to the demands of managing people, processes and technology to raise safety and environmental standards in global container and cargo handling operations. APM Terminals has made a corporate commitment to ensure all its operations are safe, secure and sustainable.  Mr. Furniss, who took up his current role at APM Terminals in January 2015, was previously Group Director Health, Safety & Wellbeing for telecoms company Vodafone. He also served as Head of Health, Safety, Environment & Sustainability for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, working for the Olympic Delivery Authority's Delivery Partner CLM on a £9.3bn project covering all venues, infrastructure and facilities. He has worked in senior EHS and HSSE roles for major brand names including Cadburys and Ford Motor Company, among others. “Like APM Terminals, ICHCA is committed to enhancing safety and best operational practice in cargo handling and transport on a global basis,” said Rachael White, ICHCA International Secretariat CEO. “Attendees at ICHCA’s 2016 conference will appreciate the chance to share views on how to improve our industry’s health, safety and environmental performance.” APM Terminals became a premium member of ICHCA in January this year. Bringing a cross-section of industry and institutional stakeholders together, the high-level event includes two days of conference sessions and a site visit to the Port of Barcelona, one of the Mediterranean's largest and most diverse cargo handling and logistics hubs. There will also be extensive networking opportunities including two drinks receptions. ICHCA is offering all attendees who book before 18 Dec a 10% reduction on the full conference rate.
