The Village of Elwood has followed through to restrict truck traffic on their local roads and erected barriers to prevent thousands of trucks from access to Baseline Road from Walter Strawn Road through the Elwood International Port to the UP Joliet intermodal Terminal. The result is trucks, including local trucks backhauling grain in intermodal containers, are restricted from making deliveries from Illinois Route 53, and therefore, must enter the facility off of Arsenal Road and I-55, a major detour adding many miles, plus forcing more trucks into the already congested Des Plaines River Bridge construction zone. MTA is part of a coalition of groups requesting a meeting with Elwood regarding the ordinance. which is now in effect. We hope to schedule the meeting no later than next week. In the meantime, if you are a regular traveler on Ill. Route 53 and frequent these facilities, be aware of the changes. Alternate routes are few and restrictive. Police are prepared to issue tickets (a moving violation) for those looking for short-cuts. If you are running in the area and have issues, keep us updated at (217) 525-0310.
