FESCO announced that its containership, the Vasily Golovnin, has successfully unloaded supply cargo, fuel and equipment to the polar stations of Argentina in the Antarctic. The cargoes were delivered to shore by two KA-32 helicopters located onboard the FESCO vessel. The Vasily Golovnin is now enroute from General Belgrano II to Orkadas station. The Vasily Golovnin arrived at General Belgrano II station under the ice lead of the icebreaker the Kapitan Dranitsyn. The ice conditions were adverse and the icebreaker had to stop several times to break a channel for the transport vessel. Both ships moved with the variable speed of 2-5 knots making way in the 1-1.5 m deep ice pack.’ The Vasily Golovnin commenced her voyage on December 31, 2008 departing from Buenos Aires under the time-charter with the Government of Argentina. The expedition to supply cargo for the polar stations of General Belgrano II, Esperanza, San Martin, Marambio, Orcadas, Jubany will take 85-100 days. This is the second expedition of the Vasily Golovnin in the Antarctic to supply the polar stations of Argentina. The first one commenced in 2008 in the south extremity of Argentina ’ the port of Ushuaia. For more than 50 years, FESCO ships have delivered various cargoes to the Russian, American, British, Australian and Argentine polar scientific stations located in the Antarctic and Arctic.
