Kuala Lumpur - Northport (Malaysia) Berhad (Northport), a member of MMC Group was named Malaysia’s Best Seaport for 2016, winning the “Outstanding Performance Award” in the Port category for two consecutive years, in conjunction with the Malaysia World Maritime Week 2017 event held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The award was presented by Yang Berhormat Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai, Minister of Transport during the opening ceremony of the World Maritime Week 2017. “2016 has been a year of success for Northport. With the slogan "Northport Kembali Gemilang", TeamNorthport had risen to the challenge and proved that they are once again a force to be reckoned with”, said Dato’ Azman Shah Mohd Yusof, Chief Executive Officer of Northport. Malaysia World Maritime Week is an annual event and a joint effort between the Malaysian Government and the maritime industry. It is organised by the Ministry of Transport and the Marine Department, Malaysia and hosted by the Malaysia Shipowners’ Association (MASA). Northport won the award based on the selection criteria set by the Committee chaired by the Ministry of Transport, which included growth in cargo handling and implementation of green initiatives, innovations and corporate social responsibility. Since the acquisition by MMC Corporation Berhad in January 2016, various activities and group internalisation programmes were carried out through an integrated implementation of the Company's transformation projects and programmes. “As a result, Northport has successfully accomplished a comprehensive reform within a short period of time which include, among others, a new set of core values and work culture, realignment of business strategy, a cleaner and greener port environment and improved safety awareness among TeamNorthport as well as the port users, with the introduction of new initiatives to enhance the safety and security within the port area”, added Dato’ Azman. 2016 saw Northport record its second highest ever container throughput in its 116-year history. Additionally, Northport was also awarded the “Outstanding Performance Award” in the Port category, in conjunction with the Malaysia World Maritime Day 2016 and was accorded Green Port status under the APSN Green Port Award System, together with Klang Port Authority and Westports in 2016. “These awards are a testimony and recognition of Northport’s outstanding performance and new-found vigour as part of the MMC Ports Group”, said Dato’ Azman. The Malaysia World Maritime Week 2017, which starts from 5-9 September 2017, is expected to gather more than 5,000 maritime professionals including high-level delegates from port authorities, industry leaders and maritime experts, participating in various WMW 2017 programmes including International Conference, Green Shipping Conference, Exhibition Fair, etc.
