ABU DHABI/PARIS - Jordan’s Ministry of Trade and Industry cancelled a tender to buy 100,000 tonnes of barley, a government source said on Thursday, the latest in a string of failed grain tenders in the import-dependent Middle Eastern country. The cancellation was confirmed by European traders, who said it was due to the absence of offers by Thursday’s bidding deadline. The barley had been sought for shipment in April. Jordan also cancelled a wheat tender on Wednesday for the same reason, adding to a series of unsuccessful bidding rounds in recent months. The limited interest in selling to Jordan has been due to stricter tender terms on grain quality inspection and payment, which create higher risks for sellers, traders say. The country has only made one known purchase of barley and wheat in recent months. It last bought barley on Nov. 5 when it bought 50,000 at $216 a tonne cost and freight (c&f) and 50,000 tonnes at $217 a tonne c&f, for shipment separately in the first and second half of March 2016. Its last wheat purchase was on Nov. 12 when it booked 100,000 tonnes at $234 a tonne c&f.
