One direction of Long Beach span shut Friday night to Monday morning The eastbound direction of the Gerald Desmond Bridge will close for a full weekend, Friday night, June 16, to Monday morning, June 19, to make way for construction of the replacement span in the Port of Long Beach. On the following weekend, June 23-26, the bridge will be closed in the westbound direction. Motorists are advised to avoid the area entirely during the weekend-long closures. Detours will be in place, but motorists who do not need to access certain piers in the Port of Long Beach should use alternate routes: Anaheim Street, Pacific Coast Highway or the 405 Freeway. This weekend’s closure gets underway at 9 p.m., Friday, June 16, and is scheduled to conclude by 5 a.m., Monday, June 19. The closure is at the Pier T on-ramp. Motorists will be detoured to exit at Pier S/State Route 47 and take SR-47 north to eastbound Anaheim Street, which connects to the 710 Freeway. Motorists going eastbound from San Pedro, the Palos Verdes Peninsula and the rest of the South Bay area toward downtown Long Beach are advised to avoid the bridge, and take alternate routes. Vehicles on Pier T in the Port of Long Beach will not have full access to the Pier T loop on-ramp to the eastbound bridge, and should plan to detour to SR-47.
