Con-way Freight announced that employees at its Harlingen, TX facility voted to reject representation by the Teamsters Union in an election conducted today at the facility by the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB). The Harlingen election results mark the fourth defeat for the Teamsters Union this year in its efforts to organize workers at Con-way Freight. Previously, employees at Con-way Freight locations in Santa Fe Springs and San Fernando Valley, CA, and Manchester, NH cast their votes to remain union free. Last month, the union also withdrew a petition for election at Con-way Freight’s facility in Irvine, CA. Previous election results at two additional Con-way Freight locations—downtown Los Angeles and Laredo, Texas—where a narrow majority of employees voted for union representation, are being challenged by the company. In both instances, the company filed objections with the NLRB alleging election interference by the union and other improprieties. “Our employees continue to demonstrate that when they are able to consider all the facts, and have the opportunity to make an informed choice in a free and fair election, they vote to remain union-free,” said Greg Lehmkuhl, Con-way Freight president. “For over 30 years we have built our success on respect for our employees and recognizing they are the key to delivering on the service promise we make to our customers. We continue to believe that our company can best meet the needs of our employees by maintaining an open and direct relationship with them, without the interference of a third party.” Con-way Freight currently does not have a contract with the Teamsters Union at any of its nearly 300 locations in the U.S.
