On May 18, 2016, Harbor Freight Transport Corp. hosted a tour of its 301 Craneway St., Port Newark, NJ facility in conjunction with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP). Harbor Freight Transport’s Operations Consultant, Joseph Mattio, conducted a tour of the warehouse and yard areas, explaining the methods of flat rack loading, crane operations, securing of cargo, container stacking and first hand views of flat rack loading with over dimension cargo. Prior to the tour, a seminar was held on the topic of SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea). The guest speakers were Robert LaMura, Manager Port Commerce at the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey; Chris Garbarino, Vice President Operations at Port Newark Container Terminal; Captain Thomas Sheridan, Deputy Chief Surveyor, National Cargo Bureau, Inc. Participants included personnel from universities, manufacturing industries, international freight forwarders, pharmaceutical industries, distribution companies and employees from Chase Bank and MARS Chocolate of North America. The participants were instructed on out of gauge cargo, CFS stations, safe cargo handling and the upcoming SOLAS/VGM rules.
