The U.K.’s opposition Labour Party pledged to tear up Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit strategy if it wins the June 8 general election and instead focus on keeping the benefits of the European Union’s Single Market and Customs Union. Keir Starmer, the party’s Brexit spokesman, will use a speech on Tuesday to say Labour would unilaterally guarantee the rights of EU citizens in Britain. It would also replace May’s Great Repeal Bill with legislation to ensure that EU environmental protections continue to apply and rights for workers and consumers are protected, he will say. “The EU has had a huge impact in securing workplace protections and environmental safeguards. That was one of the main reasons Labour and trade unions campaigned to stay in the EU,” Starmer will say, according to extracts of the speech released by his office. “But we all know that for many Brexiteers in the Tory Party, this was why they wanted to Leave. A Labour Government will never consider these rights a ‘burden’.” Labour is trailing in opinion polls that suggest it will lose seats in the election, strengthening May’s hand in Brexit talks and reducing opposition from lawmakers in the House of Commons to her strategy.
