New York, N.Y. - Thornton Tomasetti, the international engineering firm, announces that Leo A. Fernandez, P.E., has joined the firm’s Wall Street, New York office as a vice president in the Weidlinger Transportation practice. He has more than 20 years of experience in the inspection, analysis, rehabilitation and design of roadway, rail, pedestrian and long-span bridges. Fernandez will manage current and future projects and will also assist with office operations and business development opportunities.

His project experience ranges from engineering services for the AirTrain at Newark Liberty and John F. Kennedy international airports, rehabilitation work for the Verrazano Narrows and Williamsburg bridges, repair work on the Henry Hudson and Tappan Zee bridges, and most recently, the award-winning rehabilitation of the High Bridge in the Bronx, New York.  Fernandez is also well-versed in managing alternative delivery projects. Prior to joining Thornton Tomasetti, Fernandez was the department head of the structural group in Stantec’s New York City office, where he provided structural services and project management for a range of transit and rail projects. He also built up a strong portfolio of transportation work earlier in his career for private- and public-sector clients while working at Parsons, HDR and TranSystems.  Fernandez is a licensed professional engineer in New York and an associate professional of the Design-Build Institute of America. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Metropolitan Railway Club of New York and the Structural Engineers Association of New York.   Fernandez earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.  Leo A.
